Industry Earnings
Commercial banks and savings institutions insured by the FDIC reported net income of $105.5 billion in 2007, and marks the sixth year in a row that income was above the $100 billion mark. According to the FDIC ninety-nine percent of insured institutions were well-capitalized at the end of 2007, and nearly 90% were profitable for the year. Although the real estate crunch has effected many institutions, the strength of the financial industry is still sound, and looks promising for 2008.
